I am fluent in Japanese

Updated: Dec 4, 2020

ペラペラ(perapera) is a Japanese otomatopoetica, which means you are super fluent in a language. I would say people have started to be serious about your Japanese skills when they say this rather than to say 日本語上手です ”(Your) Japanese is good”

watashi wa 〈foreign language〉ga perapera desu

"I'm fluent in ~ "

kare wa san kakokugo ga perapera desu

“he is fluent in 3 languages”

*ヶ国語(kakokugo) is a counter for languages

二ヶ国語 ni kakokugo two languages

三ヶ国語 san kakokugo three languages

*The expression can not be used for your mother tongue. It refers only to the foreign language, which you speak fluently*

じゃん jyan can be used in casual speech to give someone one’s feedback, express one’s opinion, feelings.

Today's additional lesson

How to be perapera in Japanese? There are for sure several answers to this. But I will say only one thing as a person, who taught 3 languages myself.

Always base your Japanese learning off of what you like and what you care. Watch your favorite anime, favorite TV show, film and news. Or talk about your favorite food, car, drama, person and learn how do you do that in Japanese. It seems easy, but once they start to learn Japanese, we cling on to a textbook and only practice sentence like, "I have a pen" 🤣

You can even do this alone. I used to talk to myself about what I like and what happened in a day walking in the street. Believe it or not, it works!!

Just as we say,

"What one likes, one will do well."
